Moana Project Science Lead

João is the Science Lead of the Moana Project who has an interdisciplinary background in ocean processes and data assimilative hydrodynamic simulations. As Nga Ripo o Te Moana team lead, João will draw from his vast experience in hydrodynamic ocean modelling, focusing on data assimilation.

Some of João’s most recent projects include the use of lagrangian analysis methods with biogeochemical and ocean circulation modelling, and he was the principal investigator on several projects including the development of an ocean reanalysis to investigate predictability of ocean forecast systems.

João’s leadership in Nga Ripo o Te Moana will oversee the data assimilation from He Papa Moana, Te Tiro Moana, and He Hono Moana into open-access ocean data systems.
